Discussion of UMass Boston's Admissions Standards:

Admission to the University of Massachusetts-Boston is moderately selective, and over a quarter of all applicants will not be admitted. Successful applicants tend to have grades and standardized test scores that are average or better. In the graph above, the blue and green dots represent students who were accepted. Most had SAT scores (RW+M) of 950 or higher, an ACT composite of 18 or higher, and a high school average of a "B-" or better. If you have grades and/or test scores above these lower ranges, your chances of being admitted will be greater. Realize that many accepted students had high school averages up in the "A" range.

You'll notice some red dots (rejected students) and yellow dots (waitlisted students) overlapping with the green and blue in the graph. This tells us that some students with grades and test scores that were on target for the University of Massachusetts Boston did not get get in. You'll also notice some students who were admitted with grades and/or test scores that were a bit below the norm. This seeming inconsistencies in the universities admissions standards are because UMass Boston has holistic admissions -- the admissions folks try to evaluate the whole student, not just numerical data. Whether you use the Common Application or UMass's own application, the admissions folks will be looking for a strong application essay and a high school record filled with challenging college preparatory courses. Meaningful extracurricular activities can also play a positive role in the admissions equation.
