Learn about our Editorial Process Updated on March 19, 2020 University of Minnesota Duluth GPA, SAT and ACT Graph University of Minnesota Duluth GPA, SAT Scores and ACT Scores for Admission. Data courtesy of Cappex. Discussion of University of Minnesota Duluth's Admissions Standards: The University of Minnesota Duluth has moderately selective admissions. Roughly one out of every four applicants will not get in, and successful applicants tend to have grades and standardized test scores that are average or better. In the graph above, the blue and green dots represent students who were admitted. Most had SAT scores (RW+M) of 950 or higher, an ACT composite of 18 or higher, and a high school average of a "B" or higher. A strong academic record is the most important piece of an application, and you'll notice a higher correlation between grades and admission than test scores and admission. A significant percentage of applicants had GPAs up in the "A" range, and nearly all of those applicants were admitted. Note that there are a few red dots (rejected students) overlapping with the green and the blue at the lower edge of the graph. This is because the UMD admission process is not a simple numerical equation of grades and standardized test scores. The university looks at the rigor of your high school courses, not just your GPA. AP, IB, Honors, and Dual Enrollment classes can all work in your favor by helping you demonstrate your college readiness. At the least, the university wants to see that you have completed a high school curriculum that includes four years of English, four years of math including two years of algebra and one of geometry, three years of science that include laboratory experience, three years of social studies including American history and some study of geography, two years of a language, and one year of art. Students may still be admitted with deficiencies in these areas, but they will be admitted conditionally and will need to make up for the deficiencies before earning 60 credits towards graduation. The university also takes many secondary factors into consideration when making admissions decisions. UMD is always looking for students who will contribute to the diversity of the student body whether that be related to an applicant's age, culture, gender, economic status, race, or geographic origin. The university also takes into consideration challenges students may have faced in their educational journeys. If you are a first-generation college student, someone who has served in the military, or someone who has had significant personal obligations, UMD will take these personal factors into consideration. And like most schools with holistic admissions, your personal statement and letters of recommendation can play a meaningful role in the admissions process.
