Discussion of the University of Minnesota Morris's Admissions Standards:

The University of Minnesota Morris is one of the country's top public liberal arts colleges. Admissions are selective, and over a third of all applicants will be rejected. Successful applicants tend to be above average. In the scattergram above, the blue and green dots represent accepted students. You can see that most successful applicants had "B" or higher averages, and the great majority had grades of "B+" or better. Standardized test scores also tended to be above average: nearly all admitted students had SAT scores of about 1000 or higher, and ACT composite scores of 20 or above. Note that UM Morris requires applicants to take the optional ACT writing test.

Keep in mind that UMM has holistic admissions, so grades and test scores are just one part of a successful application. The admissions folks take into consideration the rigor of your high school courses and like to see challenging classes such as Advanced Placement courses. IB, Honors, and Dual Enrollment classes can also play a meaningful role in the admissions process. Your college preparatory curriculum will be the most important part of your application. At the least, Morris wants to see applicants with four years of English, four years of math (including algebra and geometry), three years of science, three years of social studies, and two years of a language.

Your application can be further strengthened by your letters of recommendation, personal interview, and extracurricular activities. LIke most schools with holistic admissions, Morris is always on the lookout for students with exceptional achievements or talents, so make sure your application clearly presents anything that might make you stand out from other applicants. These achievements can take many forms: academic, artistic, athletic, or related to your leadership ability. If you've have meaningful work experiences, that also can play a positive role in the admissions process.

The university is also willing to consider an applicant's particular challenges and extenuating circumstances that may have affected his or her high school record. If your are a non-traditional student, or if you're from a disadvantages economic or racial group, Morris will take that into consideration. The university works to enroll a rich, diverse class of students.
