Located in Kearney, Nebraska (about two hours west of Omaha), the University of Nebraska Kearney was founded in 1905 as a teachers' college. On a 500-acre campus, the school offers over 170 majors, with top choices including education, criminal justice, business administration, writing, psychology, and art. Academics are bolstered by a healthy 14 to 1 student / faculty ratio. Students can join a range of extra-curricular activities, ranging from fraternities and sororities, to academic honor societies, to performing arts groups, to recreational sports. In athletics, UNK fields eight men's and nine women's sports. Popular choices include football, track and field, soccer, basketball, tennis, swimming, golf, and baseball. The UNK Lopers compete within the NCAA Division II Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA).
