Leavenworth is just north-west of Kansas City, with a population of around 35,000. The university also has a campuses in Overland Park and Kansas City that offer graduate and degree-completion programs for working adults. The main residential campus features historic buildings, a nature preserve, and a range of athletic facilities. Students come from 38 states and many foreign countries. Students can choose from 27 undergraduate programs and six graduate programs. At the undergraduate level, nursing is the most popular area of study, and among graduate students, education has the highest enrollments. Academics are supported by an impressive 10 to 1 student / faculty ratio. Outside of the classroom, students can participate in a number of student-run clubs and activities, including academics clubs, religious groups, recreational sports, and performing arts ensembles. On the athletic front, the USM Spires compete in the NAIA Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. The university fields seven men's and seven women's intercollegiate teams.
