Discussion of URI's Admissions Standards

Admission to the University of Rhode Island isn't painfully selective, but you will need decent grades and standardized test scores to be admitted. In 2015, about 26% of applicants were rejected. As the graph above illustrates, the majority of students who received acceptance letters from URI had high school averages in the "B" range or higher, combined SAT scores of about 1000 or better, and ACT composite scores of 20 or higher.

Note that there are a few red dots (rejected students) and yellow dots (waitlisted students) hidden behind the green and blue of the graph. Some students with grades and test scores that seemed to be on target for URI did not get in. Note also that some students were accepted with test scores and grades a little bit below the norm. This is because URI looks at more than numbers. The admissions folks want to see that you have taken sufficient college-preparatory classes. The rigor of your high school courses matters, not just your grades. To quote the university's admissions website, "The strongest applicants take the most rigorous secondary school curricula available to them." The university will also take unique talents into consideration, so interesting extracurricular activities can be a positive factor in the admissions decision. Also, keep in mind that certain programs at URI might have additional requirements, and Bachelor of Music applicants will need to audition.
