Founded in 1959, the University of South Carolina Beaufort has an enviable location with close proximity to Hilton Head and easy access to Savannah and Charleston. The area is well known for its excellent resources for outdoor recreation such as golf, kayaking, and tennis. Although it's a small university, USCB actually has two campuses -- one on the Hilton Head Gateway, and one in historic downtown Beaufort. This public university has an entirely undergraduate focus, and the school feels more like a liberal arts college than a public institution. Business, education, and the social sciences are all popular at USCB, and academics at USC Beaufort are supported by a 17 to 1 student / faculty ratio. On the athletic front, the USCB Sand Sharks compete in the NAIA Sun Conference. The university fields five men's and seven women's intercollegiate sports.
