The area is well known for its excellent resources for outdoor recreation such as golf, kayaking, and tennis. Although it's a small university, USCB actually has two campuses -- one on the Hilton Head Gateway, and one in historic downtown Beaufort. This public university has an entirely undergraduate focus, and the school feels more like a liberal arts college than a public institution. Business, education, and the social sciences are all popular at USCB, and academics at USC Beaufort are supported by a 17 to 1 student / faculty ratio. On the athletic front, the USCB Sand Sharks compete in the NAIA Sun Conference. The university fields five men's and seven women's intercollegiate sports.
