Discussion of USC's Admissions Standards:

Over three-quarters of applicants to USC receive rejection letters -- the university is one of the more selective schools in the country. In the graph above, the blue and green dots representing accepted students are concentrated in the upper right corner. The majority of students who get accepted to the University of Southern California have "A" averages, SAT scores (RW+M) above 1200, and ACT composite scores above 25. Higher test scores will improve your chances measurably, for over 75% of admitted students have an ACT composite score of 30 or higher and a combined SAT score around 1300. But even if your grades and scores are on target for USC, you have no guarantee of admission. There are a lot of red dots hidden beneath the blue and green on the graph. Also keep in mind that a few students get accepted whose scores are a little below the ideal. These are typically students with a special talent or unique personal circumstances.

USC has holistic admissions, so the admissions folks are looking at more than grades and standardized test scores. A winning essaystrong letters of recommendation, interesting extracurricular activities, leadership experiences, and community service are all part of a winning application at USC. The university is not looking for any one particular thing in an applicant, but the admissions folks want to enroll students who will enrich and diversity the campus community.

Most important of all is the rigor of your undergraduate curriculum. To quote the USC admissions website, the university expects "that you will complete the most rigorous curriculum available to you in English, math, science, social studies, foreign language and the arts." This means Advanced Placement, IB, and Honors courses can all play an important part in the admissions process.

While it's comforting to think that "A" grades and strong standardized test scores make admission to top universities likely, the truth is a bit uglier. Plenty of straight "A" students with high ACT/SAT scores get rejected from schools like USC that have an acceptance rate in the teens.
