Absentia Reiki Treatments

Reiki practitioners can give absentia Reiki treatments to individuals with whom they are not in physical contact. Similar to offering prayers, sending Reiki's healing energies remotely involves visualization and mental focus. Absentia is conducted when requested for improvement in the recipient's health, life circumstance, or comfort. Absentia, or long distance sessions, are not meant to serve as a substitute for hands-on treatments, but are a convenient alternative when circumstances prohibit a regular treatment.

Choosing A Teddy Bear Surrogate

(c) Joe Desy
A favorite way to send distant Reiki is to use a stuffed bear as a surrogate for the absent recipient. Choose a teddy bear that fits comfortably in your lap. A red-colored bear like Cranberry, pictured here, helps remind a practitioner to stay grounded throughout this process. Sending absentia Reiki can be a "lofty" experience for the sender. Grounding energies can help keep the Reiki practitioner from "zoning out" or connecting too empathically to the distant recipient.

Incorporating Reiki Symbols

(c) Joe Desy

The Reiki practitioner uses intent by concentrating on the path the Reiki energies will travel. He will picture the building or geographical area where the recipient is located in his mind. Absentia Reiki treatments also involve incorporating Reiki symbols. Reiki symbols are drawn mentally and placed into the head or tummy of the bear before the practitioner proceeds with the various hand-placements.

Reiki Hand Placements When Using A Surrogate

(c) Joe Desy

The Reiki practitioner will proceed with the Reiki hand placements on the bear in the same manner he would have if the recipient were actually present. He begins with the head placement and will work downwards to the torso.

Noticing Energy Flow

(c) Joe Desy
It is helpful to try to "tune in" to the recipient before and during the session. Similarly to a hands-on session, the practitioner conducts an absentia treatment will notice energy flow fluxes in the palms of his hands. These fluxes help him to know where and how long to place his hands on the various areas of the surrogate's body.

Hugging Your Reiki Bear

Generally, the absentia Reiki session will end with energies being focused on the backside of the teddy bear. This is also true of a hands-on full body session. When done, the aura can be symbolically swept and cleansed. An aura sweep is accomplished with a feathering movement of the fingers in the air above the bear while it is lying on the lap. In addition, the bear can be given a hug as a demonstration of love being extended to the recipient when the session is over.

Pocket-Size Absentia Reiki Surrogates

(c) Joe Desy
Miniature teddy bears that fit inside a pocket, purse, or glove compartment can also be used as surrogates for absentia Reiki. Choose a bear that fits snugly inside the palm of your hands. The practical side of having a smaller pocket-size surrogate is that it can go with you anywhere. I've seen small bears as keychain ornaments that could function as surrogates.

Sending Reiki Anytime Anywhere

(c) Joe Desy
Hand placements are not used with miniature surrogates. The practitioner sends Reiki energies to the recipient in general, rather than focusing on various areas of the body. With this smaller focusing Reiki tool cupped between hands absentia can be sent from almost anywhere. Reiki can be sent long distance while you are riding as a passenger in a car or bus, while sitting in a waiting room, while watching a movie at the theatre, etc.

Get Creative Choosing Your Reiki Surrogates

(c) Joe Desy

Generally, teddy bears are used as surrogates to represent the recipient to whom the practitioner is sending Reiki energies. Feel free to be creative in choosing a different object to serve as your surrogate. My daughter adores penguins. I will use a stuffed penguin as a surrogate whenever I direct absentia energies her way. My husband favors frogs. You could choose a stuffed dolphin, tiger, or whatever as your surrogate. Sending Reiki involves intent... what surrogate you use doesn't really matter.

Using Reiki Surrogates for Wildlife or Planetary Healing

(c) Joe Desy

This photo demonstrates a glass bird being used as a focusing tool to send Reiki to the bird kingdom. This blue bird could be used to send healing to wildlife in general as well. Another focusing tool that can be used when sending Reiki to help heal our planet is a plastic or glass globe held inside the palms.
