Sharing its name with the gemstone (which is also the September birthstone), sapphire is a shade of blue. Sapphires come in other colors but the color name sapphire refers to blue. - Jacci Howard Bear's Desktop Publishing Colors and Color Meanings

In reality, blue sapphire gemstones come in many shades of blue from light to dark. However, the color sapphire usually refers to a medium cornflower blue and darker, but still bright, blue hues.

Sapphire carries the blue symbolism of importance and confidence. Although it's not a light or pastel blue, it still has something of a fresh, springlike quality with a touch of childlike playfulness. Deeper sapphire blues carry a connotation of wealth, elegance, beauty and royalty. Traditionally the sapphire gemstone, and by extension the color sapphire, symbolizes truth and sincerity. Sapphire blue is a cool color.

Using the Color Sapphire in Graphic Files

When designing a project that will be printed in ink on paper, use CMYK formulations for sapphire in your page layout software or select a Pantone spot color. For display on a computer monitor, use RGB values. You may need HEX codes when working with HTML, CSS and SVG. Sapphire blue shades are best achieved with the following information:

  • Sapphire (Cornflower blue):  Hex #082567 | RGB 8,37,103 | CMYK 92,64,0,60
  • Light Sapphire Blue: Hex #6495ed | RGB 100,149,23 | CMYK 58,37,0,7

Choosing Pantone Colors Closest to Sapphire Blue

When working with printed pieces, sometimes a solid color sapphire, rather than a CMYK mix, is a more economical choice. The Pantone Matching System is the most widely recognized spot color system. Here are the Pantone colors suggested as best matches to sapphire blue.
