A reader says, “Someone told me I needed to get a salt lamp to help clear away negative energy in my house. What the heck is a salt lamp, where do I find one, and how does it work?”

Salt crystal lamps are pretty neat, and they’re not hard to find. It’s basically just a giant salt crystal with a hollow part carved out in the center, where you can place a candle. Usually salt lamps are an amber or pink color, but sometimes you can buy them in white as well, although those seem to be harder to find. There are some available that have a light bulb in them, that you can plug in, but the candle version works nicely as well.

If you believe that your house - or any other space - has some unpleasant vibes going on, a salt crystal lamp is definitely a great option. Even if you don't think you've got a lot of negativity around you, these are pretty handy for just allowing everything to feel more balanced around you.

The theory is that salt lamps are natural generators of negative ions, which is in direct contrast to the positive ions generated by all of your electrical doodads – your microwave, the television, that laptop you can’t walk away from. In many metaphysical traditions, it is believed that the negative ions of the salt crystal lamp balance out all of those positive ions being generated by everything else.

How do they work? Our Holistic Healing Expert, Phylamena lila Desy, says, “The heat from a lighted salt lamp attracts moisture. The evaporation of water through salt emits negative ions. How many negative ions a salt lamp or salt candle holder can release depends on its size and how warm a match-lit candle or electric light bulb makes it.”

Some people believe that the ions generated by salt lamps can help with everything from allergies to chakra imbalances to Seasonal Affective Disorder. Remember that salt itself has a lot of magical folklore behind it.

When you’re buying a salt crystal lamp, you actually want to shop by weight. The heavier the chunk of salt is, the broader its properties of ionization. A bigger physical space needs a bigger salt crystal lamp. A 6-8 lb. salt lamp will generate enough ions for a room about 100 feet square. If you have a larger space, you can buy multiple salt lamps and place them around the room(s) for full coverage.

As to where to buy them, there are a number of online vendors who sell both the candle-burning types and the light bulb-style salt crystal lamps. However, the best way to find one is to go to a local metaphysical shop so you can actually see and feel the lamp you’re bringing home with you.

If your salt crystal lamp gets dusty, as they sometimes do, do not immerse it in water. Use a lightly damp cloth or sponge to wipe it down, and then dry it with a soft towel. An alternative to towel-drying is to just light the candle inside it, and let it warm up, which will dry it as well.

As far as clearing away negative energy, yes, a salt crystal lamp is a great tool to use. Keep in mind that there are a number of other ways you can do this. Be sure to read about Cleansing a Sacred Space for more information.
