Using a state-by-state Google Maps search, you can find 53 Springfields in 34 of the United States. Which real-life Springfield is the model for the Springfield on The Simpsons? It's hard to say. But there have been clues in various episodes, and from cre that make some fans sure they know they true location.

History

According to a variety of interviews, Matt Groening chose the name "Springfield" for the town where the Simpsons live, simply because it is one of the most common city names in the United States.

But over the years, Groening and the writers have enjoyed teasing fans with clues as to where the town might be located.

Direct Evidence

In several episodes, we've seen clues as to where Springfield might be located.

In "Duffless," Homer Simpson's driver's license reads "Springfield, NT 49007."

In "Simpson and Delilah," Homer's social security number is 568-47-0008. Social security numbers that begin with 568 are typically issued in California.

In "Mr. Lisa Goes To Washington," Springfield's congressman, Bob Arnold, is approached by two different shady corporate types and offered bribes, firstly to cut down Springfield's National Forest, and secondly, later in the episode, to drill for oil on Mount Rushmore. This places Springfield firmly in South Dakota.

Indirect Evidence

Indirect evidence includes facts we know from watching The Simpsons, but don't point to a specific episode.

Springfield enforces capital punishment by electrocution, as referenced in "Bart the Murderer."

Springfield has its own international airport.

Springfield includes a large gorge, such as in "Bart the Daredevil."

Springfield has its own docks and beach.

Other Developments

Many fans say "Behind the Laughter" definitively stated that Springfield was in Kentucky, per the narrator. But in repeats of that episode, the narrator said Springfield was in Missouri.

Where It Stands

In the May 2012 of Smithsonian Magazine, Matt Groening revealed that Springfield is located in his home state of Oregon. He said that Father Knows Best was his inspiration, because the show was set in Springfield. As a child, Groening thought they meant his Springfield, near his home in Portland, Oregon.

In 2007, Twentieth Century Fox held a contest for cities of Springfield to prove their love for The Simpsons on video. The winner, Springfield, Vt., beat out 13 other Springfields across the country. That Springfield won the honor of hosting the hometown premiere of The Simpsons Movie. Videos were posted on USA TODAY's website, where readers voted for their favorite.

But Springfield is anywhere you want it to be. There is enough evidence in the hundreds of episodes of The Simpsons to preclude Springfield's placement in any specific American state. There are so many geographical contradictions between episodes that it is impossible for Springfield to actually exist somewhere real.
