The White House is currently home to the president of the United States and the first lady. The White House also serves as the executive office. John Adams and his wife, Abigail, were the first to live there and moved in during 1801 although George Washington actually oversaw the building of the residence.

The White House is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, D.C. 20500, and mail for the president, vice president, first lady, and staff can be sent to that address. You can also write to the president by visiting whitehouse.gov and fill out an online form to send a message to the White House.

Hundreds of letters are sent to the president each week. The letters will first pass through The Office of Presidential Correspondence to screen and direct the issues to the best office to handle the issue addressed.

At the White House

The White House Office is headed by the White House chief of staff. The staff members of the various offices are located in the West Wing and East Wing of the White House, as well as in executive office buildings.

Tips for Contacting the White House

It's important to be realistic. Due to the volume of correspondence sent to the Office of the President, the White House does not respond to every letter or email. These tips will help smooth the way so your correspondence has a better chance of being read and responded to:

  • The White House prefers email as the fastest way to reach the president.
  • Keep things standard. If you write a letter, ideally it should be typed on an 8 1/2- by 11-inch sheet of paper. If a letter is handwritten, use a pen and make the writing clear and legible.
  • Include your return address on both the letter and envelope.
  • List your email address and phone number in the letter.
  • When addressing the envelope, write the full address of the White House including the zip code.

Where to Write for White House Tour Tickets

To tour the White House, do not write to the White House offices. Public tour requests must be submitted through your Member of Congress. The White House webpage notes the specifics of taking a tour:

"Tours are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis and a limited number of spaces are available; therefore, you are encouraged to submit your request as early as possible. White House tours are typically hosted on Fridays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. (excluding federal holidays and unless otherwise noted). If your tour is confirmed, please note that you will be assigned a specific time and all tours may be subject to change or cancellation."

The National Park Service notes that you can submit a request to tour the White House up to three months in advance but no less than 21 days in advance.

Social Media Addresses

Social media is being used more and more for announcements by the White House as well as a way to share photographs and commentary. There are official accounts and personal accounts with much activity on both. Social media is not the best way to contact the White House but has been used to gain the attention of the president.
