Discussion of Whitman College's Admissions Standards

Whitman College has selective admissions, and over half of all applicants will receive a rejection letter. In the graph above, the green and blue dots represent accepted students. As you can see, the majority of students who got in had GPAs in the "A" range, SAT scores (RW+M) above 1200, and ACT composite scores of 27 or higher. Many admitted students had 4.0 averages.

Good grades and test scores, however, do not guarantee you an acceptance letter. Throughout the graph you'll see a bit of red (rejected students) and yellow (waitlisted students) interspersed with the blue and green. Some students whose grades and test scores were on target for admission to the college were rejected. On the other hand, a number of students were accepted with test scores and grades a little below the norm. This is because Whitman College has holistic admissions -- the admissions officers are considering qualitative as well as quantitative information. A rigorous academic record, winning essay and interesting extracurricular activities all contribute to a successful application. You can further strengthen your application by writing the optional "Why Whitman?" essay in the supplement to the Common Application (see tips for supplemental essays), and by doing an optional interview.
