Though she was born in Norman, Okla., Today Show co-host Hoda Kotb surely considers herself more of a West Virginian, where she grew-up. She graduated from Virginia Tech with a bachelor's in broadcast journalism.

Her first professional job was as a CBS news assistant in Egypt, where her parents are from. After a year in Cairo, Kotb returned to the states and worked as a local news anchor and general assignment reporter for stations in Mississippi, Illinois, Florida and Louisiana.

In 2009, Kotb told MediaBistro that - beyond talent and experience - a lot of her career path comes down to luck and timing.

"A lot of it was just timing and luck along with hard work. A lot of people work hard, but I think I got lucky with timing," she tells the news outlet.

Further, Kotb says she always wanted to be in television.

"I started off just wanting to do it because I liked the live element," she told MediaBistro. "I always thought newspapers were yesterday, and I like the current. I wasn't one of those people who thought, 'I'm going to be at the network by the time I'm 30.' I just lived where I lived, took the next step, and moved on."

Hoda Kotb joins 'The Today Show'

Kotb has been with NBC since 1992, serving as a Dateline NBC correspondent since 1998. She was named co-anchor of Today's fourth hour in August 2007 alongside Kathie Lee Gifford.

In 2007, Kotb revealed she had breast cancer and underwent a mastectomy.

She kept a video diary after her diagnosis and shared it with Today viewers. "Cancer gave me the gift of being fearless," Kotb said about the mastectomy. "What I get from this whole horrible ordeal is 'You can't scare me.'"

Kotb has received numerous awards, including The four-time Emmy nominee also won.
