Students come from all around the country and world, but the great majority (over 90%) are from Kansas. Most students live off campus. The university has a 20 to 1 student / faculty ratio, and about two-thirds of classes have fewer than 30 students. Professional fields in business, nursing, education and engineering are all popular with undergraduates. Outside of the classroom, students can join a number of clubs and organizations, including fraternities and sororities. In athletics, the Wichita State University Shockers (what's a Shocker?) compete in the NCAA Division I American Athletic Conference. Popular sports include basketball, tennis, track and field, and golf.
