Xavier University of Louisiana, a liberal arts college located in New Orleans, is the country's only historically black university affiliated with the Roman Catholic church. 70% of XULA students are African American, and 56% come from Louisiana. The college has particular strengths in the sciences; both biology and chemistry are extremely popular among undergraduates. XULA has an impressive record of placing African American students into medical school. The university's strengths in the sciences are complemented by a core curriculum that is heavy in the liberal arts.
